The 1790 US Census recorded a population of 3,929,214. That's the earliest reliable population statistic. It's important to keep in mind that that figure DOES NOT include either slaves or Native Americans. The actual population was probably at least twice that number, but that's just an educated guess.
Similarly, any figures before that date are just that, guesses. There simply is no reliable data available.
