Technological? Guido D'Arezzo invented the earliest form of the music staff and notes (e.g., how we write music) and also the solfegge system of sight-singing. The organ was developed. Lots of string instruments and also the precursor of the oboe were imported from the Arab lands.

We don't know much about Roman music since they had no way of writing it down. Evidently they liked singing (ref. American Idol) and their military enjoyed lots of brass instruments.

some of what we do know and suspect is that the Organ was probably used for in the colleseum. they had a primitive form of oboe called the shawm that was probably used in the military.

if you want to find out more you'll probably have to find an expert on the topic. if there's a university near by with a medieval music professor go ask them.

The music stop on the Organ called the "Tibia" comes from the fact that early man used a hollowed out human or animal tibia bone with finger holes drilled into it as a primitive flute, so that was definitely around during the medieval ages.

The Glendale, California public library system has a branch that specializes in music and the arts. Write to them, they may be able to help you find more information.
