The original Marines were soldiers who were carried onboard ship for the purpose of boarding and taking over other ships and to attack enemy fortifications from the sea. They were referred to as Marines to differentiate them from the Mariners or sailors.

At the end of 1775 the Continental Marines where created for land and sea assaults by way of Navy ships. The first was in early 1776 - a few months later when they raided the Bahamas.

Marines were originally regular army (ground forces) assigned to ships. This practice of putting ground based soldiers on ships goes back through time to even before the Greeks or Egyptians.

Marines were meant to provide protection from pirates and raiders and in case of war gave a ship a fighting compliment that could board enemy vessels or attack shore line towns and ports.

The designation "Marine" was given to any soldier who specialized as a Maritime soldier and made them distinctive from their land locked brothers.

Through time the name "Marine" stuck, and now all major military forces have men trained as land and sea soldiers that are referred to universally as Marines.
