The majority of India (84%) is Hindu....other Indian born religions include Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism...Foreign born religions that are practiced in India include Islam, Chrstianity, Judaism and Zoroastrianism......
All religions in India live happily with each other in one big brotherhood.....with the exception of muslims who always start trouble, cause fights and try their level best to disrupt peace and harmony.....
In answer to your question, Indians are modernising very fast and as a result religion is less important today than it was 20 years ago....Most Indians consider themselves to be individuals as opposed to "Indians" or "hindus"...Most Indians are looking to taking India into modernity and sophistication and to make it a superpower - again with the exception of muslims who are only looking to outbreed the hindu majority and thereby make india into a muslim country....
hope that answers your question

Religion is affecting everyone after 1989 when BJP party started playing dirty politics in India just to grab the power at the Central govt. Also a big shame was brought to the Indian nation in 1992 by the same BJP and its allies when they destroyed the Babri Masjid. The majority community, Hindus should be aware of this attitude and its consequences. Dividing the nation on community lines is dangerous phenomena. This has led to breakage of many nations in the past.

It creates riots between muslims and hindus, and by hindus against others who convert the lower-caste hindus to another religion.
