    I say Honda Pilot

The Pilot manages to combine the best of a wagon, SUV, and minivan at an affordable price. It's a car-based SUV like the upscale Acura MDX. The Pilot's a bit roomier, though, and less costly. It's currently among top SUV choices for this class. The Pilot delivers spirited performance yet respectable fuel economy; a comfortable ride; secure, responsive handling; and seating for eight. Pronounced road noise was our only qualm. The standard split third-row seat folds neatly into the floor. Access is easy, and fit and finish is impeccable. Crash-test results are impressive.

The best overall value in small and midsize SUV is the Hyundai SantaFe. Avoid the 4-cylinder model. Always opt for the V-6 and you want one with the 2.7 or the 3.3 liter twin OHC engine. The 3.5 V-6 is a SOHC engine and is sturdy, but eats a lot more fuel.

Another good option is the Toyota Highlander. I have one of those now and it is a good vehicle. The highlander is tough as a pine knot, but is a fuel hog. (mine is 3.0). The highlander been reliable and durable with no problems either.

Although the SanteFe is significantly less expensive, I like the ride, handling, comfort, reliability, etc. much better than Highlander. So, I will be trading back to a SantaFe or a VeraCruz next year. I never buy a new car, always get one 1 or two years with 20k miles (program or demo, etc).

30 mpg highway or overall? You are basically looking at the Ford Escape hybrid. Drive it first. Not the best of the bunch. The Saturn Vue hybrid may not be a bad choice. Neither will get you 30 mpg. I think you may set your sights lower on mpg. Personally I would look at the Rav4 or Highlander.

Don't know if this is considered mid-size, but I have a Ford Explorer Sport and I love it. It's a 2001, with almost 90k miles on it and I've never had a problem with it.
