    Hola Garrr!

Are you in an English-speaking country? If so, the student might feel eager to practise her/his English skills.

Otherwise, it would be nice to welcome the student in her/his native language...you know, saying something simple, yet nice and meaningful

    ¡Bienvenida(o)!

She's the student, speak to her in English. She can get Spanish at home.

Do they speak English? Do you know Spanish well enough?

you should speak to her in spanish, she will be very glad to heard someone speak their language, as long as you know how to say it
