I refer the honourable gentleman to the answer I gave some moments ago?

Why does the Prime Minister repeatedly get asked to list his official engagements for the day during Prime Ministers Question Time, and have to keep repeating "I refer the honourable gentleman to the answer I gave some moments ago?"

I don't know about the "I refer the honourable gentleman...." but I have heard that he is asked to list his official engagements because after he has been asked that, the questioner can then ask ANOTHER, unrelated, question that the PM has not had time to prepare. Usually, the questions must be submitted in advance so that civil servants can find lots of facts and figures to back up the PM's answer; but the opposition want to catch him out with a question that he hasn't been able to prepare.
