I think the important question here is whether he tries to do anything for you. Valentine's Day doesn't have to be about buying things for your girlfriend; just letting you know that he cares about you is a good thing. He could make you a card, write you a poem, call you on the phone at work and tell you he loves you, etc., etc.
Something's wrong, but is the problem that you're obsessed with the material gifts that you're not getting, or is he just not trying? If he isn't making an effort to do anything for you, then that ought to tell you something about how considerate a guy he is. On the other hand, if he's trying to do nice things for you and you're ignoring his efforts because they don't involve roses and diamonds, then you're the one with your head in the ground.
