Warren Ellis from Grinderman, the Dirty Three and the Bad Seeds is excellent. From earlier times..you have had Jerry Goodman from the Flock and Mahavishnu Orchestra,Jean Luc Ponty from Zappa and solo,Don "Sugarcane" Harris from Zappa,Pure Food and Drug Act and John Mayall,L Shankar,a solo artist,Charlie Daniels...Ellis can be heard with Nick Cave doing the soundtrack for the "Jesse James" movie starring Brad Pitt.

UK in 1978 was the first to feature Violin as a lead instrument with Eddie Jobson who had previously played Violin with Roxy Music. UK are now semi-reunited as UKZ. In the late 60's and early 70's King Crimson and Frank Zappa had both used the Violin prominently with David Cross and Jean Luc Ponty respectively - if not necessarily as a lead instrument. ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) of course had an entire string section back in the mid-70's.

Yellowcard is probably the best-known one that uses a violin as a regular instrument. At least, I don't know of any others.

Three Days Grace has violins in one of their songs, 'Over and Over.'

Alexi Laiho (Children of Bodom) played violin so his guitar sort of sounds like it....
