In your example A = arctan (X/1), not arctan(X). Numerically the same, but the units of the arguments are not. So in your final result X is unitless, giving a result for dA/dt having units of 1/sec. Radian is unitless; it is the ratio of the subtended arc length to the circumference of the unit circle. It is convenient to give it a name, but it can be confusing if thought of as a "unit". -Denis
