What is the computer program steam?

Just fill me in on what it is. I know that you play computer games on it, that's about all i know. Also, if i have a game, that i bought from the store, downloaded on my computer can i put it on steam? PLEASE HELP!!!

Steam is basically an application that you can play games through.

I myself have steam and own several games including counterstrike:source. Steam lets me talk to the friends i have made within the game, and check the servers currently running within the game etc. It also possesses news on releases of new games and an online store.
