General meaning: A rotation is a movement of an object in a circular motion. A two-dimensional object rotates around a center (or point) of rotation. A three-dimensional object rotates around a line called an axis.

    In term of Astronomy:

Rotation is when a planet/planets spin/s in its axis which contribute to the phenomena of day and night. Rotation is synonym to spin, revolve, etc. Note: Orbiting is not synonym to rotation/spinning.

The Earth itself is spinning even as we revolve around the sun. Think of Earth as a "top" spinning in the palm of your hand as you walk around a chair. The same principles apply to our Solar system.
