How do I go about getting/installing anti-virus and anti spy-ware onto my laptop?

I'm still computer illiterate, so please give me some detailed instructions. Can I download it from a safe and secure source(on the internet)or do I need to purchase the software? Thanks!

These days you need more than just a virus protection. Only about 15% of all malware is viruses. The rest is worms, trojans, phishing schemes, spyware, etc.

Here's some ideas to "roll ya own" Internet Security Suite for free. Free is always the best.

    ---------------------------------------

    1. For your Anti-Virus......(Always use only 1 A-V...You must NEVER use more than one anti-virus, Even an expired anti-virus can cause a major conflict)

For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than many of "paid-for" anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer's resources. And did I mention that it's free!

    Download here:

    http://www.free-av.com/

Avoid an anti-virus called AVG (free version). It is wildly popular but has poor virus detection rates.

    --------------------------------

    2. For your Firewall..........(Always use only 1 software firewall)

A decent free firewall that is PC Tools Firewall Plus. One can either choose "Normal User Mode" Or "Expert User Mode"'depending on the desired detail of alerts and application custom rules.

It is one of the few free firewalls that will work (and work well) on Vista as well as XP and 2000.

    http://www.pctools.com/firewall/

    -------------------------------

    3. For your Anti-Adware and Anti-Spyware needs...............(use at least 1 anti-spyware, but 2 is OK):

    SUPERAntiSpyware:

    http://www.superantispyware.com/

    -----------------------------------------

    4. And to help protect your computer from ever getting infected with malware in the first place............ (use them both)

SpywareBlaster helps to immunize your computer again certain selected malware.:

    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.htm...

SiteAdvisor warns you when visiting a potentionally malicious web-site:

    http://www.siteadvisor.com/

    -----------------------------------

    5. And always keep your Windows 100% updated and patched with all critical and security updates from Windows Updates. THIS IS A MUST! In Internet Explorer just click Tools then Windows Updates.

    ----------------------------------

    Everything here is 100% free!!!!!!

    Great luck! Enjoy!

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from the following linkhttp://www.computeractive.co.uk/. On the home page select downloads and then the appropriate category.I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps

Theres alot of free anti virus / spyware etc. on the web.

    To name a few

    AVG

    Avast

    Clamwin

Clam win as for as my knowledge is the only portable USB antivirus software.

    AVG

Is the most popular since its small free and fast. But its main disadvantage is, it only scans files but not system memmory.

It doesn't also remove them well, only deletes the file.

    http://free.grisoft.com/

    Avast

From what I tried, I really like avast, you can get the free home edition on their website by registering.

    http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

You can get it there, Remeber you need to REGISTER also [2 minutes its quick] Then download an enter the registration code you enter into the email after you install.

After which it will run automatically. It will appear in your system tray. It automaticaly runs in the background. But you should run a full scan once week.

The lighting button is the scan, and the play button is to begin scanning. Its best you see it your self, just press the buttons an see what each does. There is only 4 :P so won't take too long.

Clam win, really basic, better used if you know a tad more about computers.

    http://www.clamwin.com/

If you have more questions just feel free to ask.

    As for purchasing,

most of the commerical onces are slow, and annoying.

If you want a firewall also, Zone Alarm is a free fire wall service

A firewall, basicaly is a program which prevents people from connecting to you, and programs on your computer (trojans) from connecting to them. But they are a tad annoying asking you which programs which you will allow to connect to the internet an which ones you don't. So it takes time to setup an can annoying to certain people. But once you set the restrictions the first time, they won't ask again.

If you want the extra security that is.

Any operating system you run will need AntiVirus, Malware Scanners, and a Firewall to ensure optimum protection. New viruses and spyware are developed every day. Even news agencies learned IE 8 is subjected to unauthorized access with a backdoor recently discovered. Apple is also subjected to viruses. Be sure you install a top notch protector like AVG/Avast/Norton/McAfee.

I use Windows Defender, it's free and was recommended by a BT engineer. Just put Windows Defender into the search box then follow the instructions to download.

I use AVG, Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. It is always good to have a mixture of programs because while none are perfect, you can keep your system clean with a few. The ones I use are all free.

If you don’t want to download, try running some of these online scans. Online scans allow you the privilege of cleaning your system when a virus will not let you run you protection. Find them here:

Some people have good results with CCleaner. CCleaner is a free program to benefit your system and increase your privacy. It removes unused files from your system - allowing your computer to run faster and get more space on your drive. The program can also clear system history. This program contains no spyware or viruses and is a safe download. Find it here:

I advise you not to run multiple anti-viruses as they could work against each other.

Anti-virus programs detect and delete viruses on your system. Always make sure to update your computer with the latest program update before running. Here are some other anti-viruses:

Here are some firewall programs. Firewall programs are designed to protect you computer from unauthorized and unwanted communication through your network. Again, don’t run more than one and remember to always make sure you have the latest update:

    http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fi...

    http://www.jetico.com/

    One for Vista:

    http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fi...

Here are some anti-rootkit programs. Rootkits are malware that can take over your computer:

    http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fi...

    http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fi...

Finally, some spyware removals. Spyware also allows people to control and learn about you by gathering information from your computer.:

    http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fi...

And an article about good security programs:

Keep in mind that if the problem is serious, you should boot your computer up in Safe Mode. To do so, hold down F8 at startup.

    I hope this helps!

Or find me in Yahoo360.They are in my Blog.

    By this address. setarehsobh_alireza@yahoo.com

My suggestion is using Trend 2008,because if you have access to download a file by 85 MB,tell me send you a product key to activation that.

It's mine ,for three times using.I used one, if also you use that ,remain is one for me.just please don't give it to others.

You can find it by searching trend in internet.
