Residency Application process and ITIN?

My parents are currently processing their Residency for INS. I want to add them as dependants for taxes, will need to request an ITIN # since they don't have yet social security numbers. By doing so, would this affect their INS process? would this cause a trouble or delay??

The IRS has nothing to do with immigration (I heard that even some illegals do get their tax return, or child tax credit, for instance)... it's simple: if you have dependents, and they cannot be issued a SSN, then you have to request a ITIN for each one of them.

Also, you don't request the ITIN prior to filing your 1040 (tax return form). You do both at the same time.

The good info is here: http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96287...
