Romans beleived in the republic, though their first few centuries they were ruled by Kings. most of the kings were Etruscan, the neighboring power to the north. (Romans were Latins, ergo they spoke Latin)

Not sure how it actually happened, but the story told of the overthrow of the Etruscan kings is strikingly similar to the athenians who overthrew their kings the same year (also a striking coincidence).

I suspect that there was brewing animosity over being ruled by a foreign king, and it just snowballed as they tried to emulate the Greeks (who they would have heard all about, as the Greeks had colonized much of the italian peninsula by this time.
