How do I obtain a copy of my Honorable Discharge Certificate?
I don't need the personnel or medical records. I already have them, but my certificate was destroyed in a house fire several years ago.

I recently asked for a copy of promotion orders. I received a document that showed my E5 date of rank and E6 date of rank (DA Form 2-1). The note that came with it stated that they do not retain copies of orders. I am guessing to reduce the bulk of the millions of files. I am looking at my discharge as I type this. It is a DD Form 256A 1 May 50.
It is unlikely they have this in St. Louis in your jacket. They may be able to direct you to the right place or arrange a duplicate themselves.
I am scanning mine now to add to the CD in The Safe Deposit box.

You need your DD-214. This is the form ALL service members are issued at discharge that lists all schools and everything you ever did in the service.
Go to www.va.gov and find the link to request a duplicate.
In reality you lost two documents. Copy 2 and Copy 4 of your DD-214. Both are very important depending if you ever need to show it to anyone for any reason. Ask for both copies.
IF you are really just looking for the discharge certificate that is made by each command and is more for show than anything else. Not sure if you could get a real one made for you again unless you got out recently and the same chain of command is still at your last command. You can also request your service record be sent you on CD-ROM if the certificate made it into your record you will be able to copy it from the disk. You can request that from the VA site also.

The best paper to have is your DD214. This can be obtained on line at http://vetrec.archives.gov/. For a complete micro fish of your record that can be obtained from St Lewis. It will not include medical records. This will be a complete history of Military service. When you get your DD214 take it to your local court house to the clerk and recorders office and have it put on their books. If for no other reason it will be needed when you die.
http://vetrec.archibes.gov/ doesn't exist!

I have the same problem. They were destroyed in a fire at my fathers garage where they were being stored.
