Students are told not to use personal pronouns like "you" in their academic writing. Why should writers avoid personal pronouns?

When you use personal pronouns in academic writing, you are placing the reader in the essay. I really don't want to be in your essay.
For example, if you are writing about how to do something, the use of you puts me in your essay.
When you make brownies, the one thing that you have to be careful about is baking them. You do not want to bake them to long or your brownies will come out hard.
Has your teacher also told you not to use contractions? You should use them either.Source(s): former English teacher

they say that b/c they say it is used as a crutch and it causes students to be horrible writers. they are trying to get the students away from them and starting sentences differently. i'm only a freshman in high school and i'm not even allwoed using any form of "i" or "you" in anything for english.
