substitute, replace的差異

這個句子,我不知該用substitute或 replace ,請大家幫忙,謝謝

Currently foreign drivers operate the bullet trains, but

Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation hopes local drivers will ______

them within one and a half years.

好像放substitute, replace都說得通,真的被弄糊塗了.謝謝高手回答

Update:

對於pat的說法,我有一點疑問,您說"簡單說 substitute 之後 是接要被換上來的" ,如果是這樣的話,表示是外籍的駕駛要取代本地駕駛哦?

那意思好像說不通吧!

Update 2:

感謝大家的踴躍回答,使我終於了解substitute, replace二者用法上的些許差異,謝謝

This is an interesting question. My instincts tells me "replace" is more appropriate. but, how about substitute? So, I did some research.

    (原諒我用英文說明, 中文詞彙的定義常會讓我困惑)

    1.) Rule #1: (replace 舊 with 新; substitute 新 for 舊)

When you are talking about an exchange, use replace if the object of the sentence is the old item:

"I replaced my old Edsel with a Porsche."

If the object is the new item, use substitute:

"I substituted a Porsche for my old Edsel."

----The Department of English, University of Victoria, 1995 , "Writer's guide"

2.) Rule #2: (replace with BETTER; substitute with EQUIVALENT)

You replace something with something/someone better.

Ex. I replaced john because he wasn't doing his job

I replaced the nozzle because it was broken.

You substitute something with something/someone of equal value

Ex. I substituted john out of the game because he was tired.

3.) Rule #3: (replace is 永久; substitute is 暫時)

Substitute often has the implication of being temporary--I will substitute for the teacher when s/he is on vacation (she will return). But if you replace the teacher it is more likely you have taken the job for good. This is not a hard and fast rule, but is usually true.

A substitute can sometimes be better that the original, however, just like a substitute teacher can be better than the permanent one. But, again, this is not always true. Often in advertisements you will see the phrase "Accept no substitute"--this means be sure to buy the product they're advertising, and don't settle for anything else (by implication) not as good.

Obvously, "substitute" can be either a noun or verb, but "replace" is only a verb, and "replacement" is the equivalent noun.

    ----http://forum.wordreference.com/showthread.php?t=20...

All rules are not universal, but usually true.

    4.) 至於preposition的用法, 可以參考這有趣的討論

    (語言沒有決定的答案, 通常是約定成俗)

    2008-01-24 14:08:54 補充:

    同意天空霸主的看法 (replace的永久在這裡可能意義較明確)

    如果用substitute, 不能說錯, 只是語意上含有只是臨時的不明確性

    This Question is about,

    A (Replace or Substitute) B

    不需要去考慮preposition

A (replace or substitute for) B

    my prior proposition is wrong.

    所以答案有兩個 replace or substitute for

    replace 在這裡較好

I use the "新" to means new item. Sorry for the confusion it caused

We are quoting from the same source.

    2008-01-24 16:16:14 補充:

Rule #3: (A replace B is 永久; A substitute for B is 暫時)

    這樣會比較清楚,

    2008-01-24 19:10:40 補充:

Rule 2 的例句, I substituted john out of the game because he was tired.

    可能不是很恰當, 沒有人會說replace不能用在此

    (這只是ballgame常用的字, 相當於中文的替換)

    2008-01-24 19:13:52 補充:

    To substitute with EQUIVALENT,

    "Substitute A for B" = to remove B and replace with A.

    "Substitute A with B" = to remove A and replace with B.

    Substitute 後接 for.

Replace 後接 with 或 no prep.

    都沒講到重點,

    Pat 講的是用法,但是沒講到重點。

    substitue - 暫代,用於暫時性,或是在某一個時段內。

    replace - 代替,永久代替。

    想想以後高鐵的外國司機要被當地的司機替代,這是暫時的還是永久的。

    小強講的不錯,除了proposition的因素外,另外用法也是很重要。

    小強第三個規矩講到重點,暫時與永久的分別。

    這兩個字 意思接近 但用法有異

    substitute A for B 用 A代替B

ex. You can substitute chicken for beef if you don't like red meat.

    如果你不喜歡紅肉 你可以用雞肉(A)代替牛肉(B)

    簡單說 substitute 之後 是接"要被換上來的"

    replace A with B 用 B代替A

The plan is to replace state funding donations with private.

He substitutes as our teacher of English.

    他代任我們的英語教師。(短暫性)

Annie is ill and Anne is to substitute her.

    Replace:

The brakes have to be replaced.

    煞車需要更換。(永久性)

    Electric lights have replaced candles.

    電燈已經取代了蠟燭。(永久性)
