On January 17, 2008, Fischer died at the age of 64 in his home in Reykjavík. He died of kidney failure, caused by an unknown sickness. Einar Einarsson, the chairman of a Fischer support group in Iceland, announced Fischer's cause of death. "He was not a man who wanted to seek medical attention. He didn't believe in Western medicine," stated Einarsson in reference to Fischer's passing.

he was such a recluse in his later years i dont think that his family/close friends will choose to release the details of his death (at least for a while) out of respect for his possible wishes.
