let the original cost of that thing is A,

    Sold at 20% discount:

    The new cost = A x (1 - 0.2) = 0.8A

There is a further discount of 10%:

    The newest cost = 0.8A x (1 - 0.1)

    = 0.8A x 0.9 = 0.72A = A x 72%

    100% - 72% = 28%

So, the overall discount percent = 28%

    設 the article be $ A :

    A(1-20%) x (1-10%) / A

    = 0.72A / A

    =0.72

so overall discount percent is 18%

    sorry .... is so be 28 % but not 18 % : ( 1-0.72) x 100 %
