With no doubt whatsoever, Bill Evans (not to be confused with a contemporary sax player)

He worked with the greatest jazz figures of the 20th century. John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Herbie Mann, Cannonball Adderley, Stan Getz

Two good albums to get started on him is

    You Must Believe in Spring

    Waltz for Debby

    Art Tatum

    Fats Waller

    James P Johnson

    Willie the Lion Smith

    Teddy Wilson

    Earl Hines

    Duke Ellington *

    Count Basie *

    Dave Brubeck

    - If you read Fats Waller's bio, you know that he, Johnson & Willie the Lion all cut their teeth at the 'rent parties' in Harlem in the 20's. Someone dragged an old piano up to a flat wherein a family needed to raise money to pay the rent, and 3 of those top-4 would battle it out (till the wee hours) for Supremacy, while folks tossed money in a jar.

    - You would also know from the Ken Burns docu that Fats was playing one night at a Club, and Art Tatum walked in, whereupon Fats gracefully retired saying something like 'The king has arrived...', thus permitting Art to finish the set.

Years earlier, at one rent party, the boys heard that this hot player from Toledo, Tatum, would be arriving -- hence, everyone brought their 'A' game, but one by one, they withdrew from the keyboard, dismayed and puzzled at Tatum's magic (read this in an old jazz book).

    * for Ellington, Basie - good players but not virtuosos, by any means. According to one Biography I read, Duke was a crummy band leader (technically), and, until Strayhorn showed up, his charts were a vague mess. He was decent composer, and piano player, however, in the Author's opinion. Duke was a master psychologist, as demonstrated by his loyal care for a group of musicians who were druggies and misfits. He did inspire his great baritone sax player Harry Carney, to stay with Duke virtually from age 17, to his death at age 64.

Bill Evans. The bearded years for sure. On your search bar, type in "Hi Lilli Hi Lo", I mean I dare to say that yes, thats a track to jot down for decades to come. Oh, and have a cup of steam milk with it. Just goes ya know.
