I would do a series that shows another side to the world of Star Trek that is barely seen. The underworld. My series would be centered on an ex-Federation officer from Earth who is wanted for a crime that he may have committed. He escapes from a Federation prison with a motley crew of other prisoners: a Ferengi male?, an aging Klingon warrior with a secret past, a former Orion slave girl turned thief, an ex-Federation Andorian officer, and a woman with a Human/Vulcan/Beta-Zed ancestry, telepathic powers and a mean left hook. They steal a ship but it becomes disabled and is captured by a cloaked planetoid that is revealed to be an ancient Dyson sphere of unknown origin. Inside the remains of an ancient civilization are found along with ships of a design that's similar to the aquatic Xindi ships. They also find a unique map that leads to something called the greatest treasure in creation called the Source. In the midst of the telepathic recording they are given clues to the next recording. Because they all were there for the first recording they must all be there for the second. The device "knows" them physically and mentally to avoid fakes. If they can decode the clues given they must go to the location together and unlock the next device. Believing their chances are better together than apart they stay to search for the Source. To make ends meet the group becomes smugglers. They steal ships and sell them to questionable buyers for profit and information. They use an ancient ship still in good condition and call it the Journey. The ship's cloaking technology assists them in their smuggling. Their exploits put them on the wrong side of the law with the Federation, Klingons, and Romulans. That's some of the backstory. The series opens when after two years without a clue to the next artifact they meet a young archaeologist and his mentor who are also researching the same ancient civilization that made the rogues' Dyson Sphere. Our rogue from Earth gives them shelter when he discovers they found a similar artifact like the one they found at the sphere. He also finds that they are being chased by men dressed all in black. The men we later learn are rogue agents from Section 31. When the rogue from Earth brings the archaeologists to the sphere, a moment of recognition happens between the Klingon and the older archaeologist. The Klingon feels he's met him before. After introductions and comparing notes, turns out that the artifact is the next clue. They access it and get the next clues to the next artifact. To complicate matters the young archaeologist was present when the second artifact revealed the clue and now they need him present to unlock the third. While no one is near, the older archaeologist's eyes start to glow and he says "We've found another one."
The series would follow their search for the Source and show the underbelly of the Star Trek world. A world that has its own heroes and adventures. I can't decide between Star Trek: Journey or Star Trek: Rogues. The first story arc would have a strong connection to one of the earlier Star Trek movies. Perhaps one of the noticeable things about the interaction of the crew would be their underlying mistrust of each other even though they work good together. The secrets that each one has adds to the tension as well. I already know how this will end in a year's time. It's a real shocker. And that, ladies and gentlemen, would be my version of the next Star Trek series. Thank you.
