I don't know the origin but was always told eat one black-eyed pea for each day of the year for luck and collard greens for money!

I like 'em anyway so why not?

    Black Peas= Pennies

Collards or any greens = Dollars

    Sweet Potatoes = Gold

It's one of those traditions that can't be trace to any one individual.

Being from the South, I always thought it was a Southern thing (or should that be "thang"), until I met my friend from Indiana, whose family, also, does it.

I was told you eat black eyed peas for humility, greens for money, and hog jowls for prosperity--virtues you want in the new year.

I have never eaten black eyed peas.

Hm-m-m, that must be why my luck is so rotten!!!

It's because people say they are lucky. It's a not-so-well-known tradition.
