Did Jane Austen ever marry?

In all her novels, almost all the heroines marry. Did she ever marry? If she did, was it b/c she married him for love or for wealth?

No, she didn't ever marry (nor did her sister, Cassandra). Jane was known to have fallen in love with a man but that man died. I remember reading her nephew's memoir of Jane Austen, and he referred to this mystery man (but gave him no name) and said the family knew about it but didn't discuss it. I suppose it was too painful. (BTW: Cassandra was engaged before this "mystery man" came into Jane's life, and her fiancé died while on a journey to the West Indies.)

Later Jane was proposed to and accepted the proposal of Harris Bigg-Wither, brother to her close friend. The next morning she told him that she had changed her mind. From everything I've read, you can assume that Jane Austen didn't love him and would have accepted for the material gain of a home and security but thought better of it.

I also read that, when she was young, she loved Madame LeFroy's brother but they were separated (because of difference in social class and money), and he eventually married someone else. If this is true, he would have been her first love and the "mystery man" her - perhaps forever - love (the one she never got over).

I always thought it was very sad that a woman who knew so much about love (and, according to her nephews and nieces, loved children and had a very good rapport with them), never married or had children of her own.

No she was sadly never married... you should read this new book by SYRIE JAMES called THE LOST MEMOIRS OF JANE AUSTEN it's historical fiction but a wonderful tale of a potential romance she almost had...fantastic book made me cry it was so good.

ALSO TWO NEWISH (2007) NON-FICTION BOOKS ABOUT HER LIFE...JON SPENCE'S BECOMING JANE AUSTEN AND LORI SMITH'S A WALK WITH JANE AUSTEN...I HAVEN'T READ THEM YET BUT PLAN TO.

No, Jane Austen never married. She was engaged for one day, but nothing came of it, it was broken off.
