Airplanes just don't fall out of the sky. Most passenger airplanes have two or more engines, and they are perfectly capable of flying to a safe landing with one engine shut down. Even if both engines were to fail (about a one in a million chance) the pilots can control the descent of the airplane and land in an open field or on a highway with little damage. It is absolutely true that the most dangerous part of your trip is driving to the airport.

Airplanes don't just "fall" out of the sky. When I was learning to fly, and was practicing "emergency landings", I would reduce the engine to idle. Guess what? The aircraft would begin a long, controlled descent. Or glide if you wish.

What often makes pilots laugh are movies where the engine in an airplane suddenly quits and the said aircraft immediately assumes a nose down attitude and starts a howling, power off dive. Sheer and utter nonsense!

Put this kind of garbage out of your head. Relax. Enjoy the flight. Maybe you will like flying so much that you will also go get a license.

I have flown in cesna's and boeing's. They are a lot of fun and very safe. When a car crashes 3 states away you never hear about it. But, when an airplane crashes anywhere it the world, it is newsworthy. There are many forces that you will feel when in flight. Turbulence, air pockets, vibration and so forth. There is no need to be scared as the planes are designed to handle the worst that mother nature can throw. The pilots keep an eye out for the safesest flightpath regarding thunderstorms and so forth. Have a safe flight.

They don't ever just fall out of the air. An airplane might hit something or it might have an explosion or a wing might fall off or something like that, but it's not going to just FALL.

I've flown a lot. I agree it's a little scary the first time, especially if you get some turbulence. But you are SIX TIMES less likely to be hurt in an airplane than driving in a car the same distance.

Airplanes don't just "fall." There are various kinds of accidents that can happen, but all of them are extremely rare.

Millions of airline flights go smoothly without ever having an incident or accident. I flew airliners for more than 20 years without ever having an incident serious enough to worry about.

Just enjoy your trip. Chat with your seat-mate, watch the movie, read a good book. You'll be there before you know it, and you'll be looking forward to your next flight.

I apologise for many of the answers given - they don't fill you with confidence eh!

Flying IS the safest mode of travel. In the unlikely event that all engines fail on an aircraft, they can still glide, so will not plummet out of the sky.

For first time flyers, be prepared for little noises within the cabin, i.e. flap and landing gear deployment, and also pitch change when engines are throttled back, or retarded during approach.

Be brave, and enjoy lifes most beautiful things - flight.

the only time the plane will fall is when the wings fall off which would be 1 in 2millinon the gilde when the engines go down

People get scared by turbulence in a plane but not by a bumpy road, it doesn't make since. Statistically you're a hell of a lot safer in a plane than in your own bathroom.

planes just dont fall out of the sky. you are safer flying in a plane then driving. i first flew wen i was like 10, and i though the scariest part was turbulence, but now i think its the best part, that and taking off. Flying is a lot of fun, dont worry about it.

They NEVER, I repeat, NEVER FALL.

No.1: The wings will NOT just pop out.

No.2: YOU will NEVER pop out.

There are always reasons behind crashes.

Well, billions of planes fly each year, and crashes are much much fewer than road accidents.
