Has anyone been stationed at Ft Huachuca, Az? What's it like and what should I expect?
I don't have a driver's license so are the shops and restaurants within walking distance from the base? It will be my first duty station with MI and I'm kinda nervous. What's the temperature like? Is it a cool place to be stationed? How are the natives? How's the food? Does the base have a lot of brass around that I have to be walking on eggshells all the time? How's the rent off base and lodging? What's the recreation like? Thanks!

Any base is what you make of it. That being said, we were there about 5 years ago.
http://huachuca-www.army.mil/sites/services/commun... (call the ACS here and they can send you a welcome Packet with additional info on the base)
Huachuca is a training post so there is some brass around there. They are always building and upgrading things around the post. They put in a really cool Swim Park when we had left last time. They have a mall, but it is small compared to some malls but hey they have a mall. They have Sears, JCPenny, and some other places at that Mall. http://www.themallatsierravista.com/html/index18.a...
They have alot of places to eat at, a movie theater, and a other odds and end places. Sierra Vista is nice, but hot during the summer. The temperatures will get to over a 100 on certain days but the heat is dry not humid. the nights will get cold though during the winter time, don't get fooled that just because it is Arizona that it don't get to cold. Certain places in Arizona do get snow.
You are not to far from the Grand Canyon (about 5-7 hours depending on how fast you drive).
It is easy to get a license in Arizona and you don't have to renew there for about 50 years.
The have cab services but there is alot around the bases with food and shops so walking is not out of the question. People are pretty nice around the area. You have Mexico about 1 hour away south, Tucson (which also has an air force base http://www.dm.af.mil/ ) about 30-60 minutes away depending on what you want to see. They have about 2 malls there (really nice) and alot more food places there, a flea market, and alot more to do of course it is a major city.
CA is not to far about 5 hours away to DisneyLand and Hollywood. http://www.hollywoodchamber.net/
Then the beaches are about 1-2 hours from there.
And then of course Vegas is about 7-10 hours away depending on how fast you drive or take the bus:
Phoenix is also about 3 hours from Fort Huachuca and there is so much to do there.
Enjoy the area. Hope you have a good time.Source(s): 12 1/2 year army spouse

"How are the natives?" Ahahahahaha.
The temperature is awesome there. I've lived in Arizona for eleven years and just moved to the east coast. I'm freezing.
"Cool place"? Honestly, no. BUT... you're in a great state. There is the grand canyon, Phoenix is about two-three hours away, California is about five hours... its a really beautiful state.
As small as the town is, I can't imagine off base housing being expensive. Good luck!

there are a lot of officers. there's not a lot to unless your into outdoors like rock climbing and camping then you'll have a great time. it's driving distance from mexico (although technically enlisted aren't allowed to go there anymore) and las vegas for weekend trips.
gets really hot but not humid at all and cold in the winter.

Expect a high crime rate and possibly to have your car jacked or at least vandalized because it's so close to the border.
