Orthopaedic trauma clinicians and researchers have long been interested in the strength and stability afforded by the various fixation devices utilized to repair lower extremity whole bone fractures [1–9]. The variety of extramedullary and intramedullary devices used for such repairs are frequently applied onto the host bone by the use of cortical bone screws, which can fail via a number of mechanisms: screw “toggling” in the bone matrix, screw pullout, screw fracture by bending or torsion, and screw stress risers leading to host bone failure [10–13]. Biomechanical investigations have traditionally utilized human cadaveric or fresh bone to mimic real life conditions.
