    were是指過去是老師,

    have been是指從以前到現在都是老師,

    語意上的差異就在現在是或不是。

    You were a teacher. 可以用在你認識的某個人現在是做別的職業,當你聽到他說他以前是老師,你不相信的樣子,就可以再說一次"You were a teacher",想要對方確認,可以當作非正式用法裡的疑問句。

    至於 have been a teacher,我可以說 I have been a teacher for 10 years. 意思就是我當老師10年了,說的人現在也還是老師。

    have been 的確是有點讓人搞混,他應該是「一直是」,而不只是曾經有過。你舉的例子,句意也是「一直是」。我查了一下網路,我想它說的應該是回教徒朝聖丟石頭的這個儀式,你可以參考一下維基百科的說明,到現在回教徒朝聖還是會做丟石頭這個儀式。

    做「曾經有過」解釋的話,一般我們會用來問有沒有去過某個地方,例如:Have you ever been to Taipei? 這句是問經驗,就不表示持續動作了。
