Recent Trends. Beginning in the 1950s the growth of suburbs encouraged

many city department stores to open suburban branches. Typically, the main,

urban store was larger and offered a wider selection of merchandise, and its

central location made it accessible to many more people. As the number of

freeways and byways increased, however, suburban stores began to attract

customers from greater distances. Pedestrian malls, free and ample parking, and

better traffic flows added to the shopper's convenience. Indeed, the department

store often served as the "anchor," or retail foundation, for the mall. By the early

1970s the mall-based chain store, often under original management, had become

the norm. Some branch locations were established specifically to compete with

discount stores. Others were established in high-income neighborhoods, where

they specialized in the more expensive lines of merchandise.
