why does a helium filled balloon sink after a day without losing any appreciable mass?
after a days shrinkage i think you will find that blowing up a different ballon to the same size as the day old balloon it would have more buoyancy

Becasue the balloon has lost helium, therefore has less lift. The helium passes easily through the molecules of the ballon, so after a certain length of time, the balloon will totally shrivel up.
The mass of the lost helium is hard to measure since helium is so light and such a tiny moleclue in comparison to the balloon molecules.

balloon's mass is same but escape of helium atoms from surface causes decrease in volume

temp might have somthing to do with it.try putting helium from first balloon into second see if its the same
