What is the difference between the two kinds of pneumococcus bacteria. I have to answer this for school.HELP!

There are 2 kinds one is called "smooth" [the colony appears shiny under a microscope] and that is due to a polysacceride coat, it has a gene for that, and these are the onse that are virulent meaning deadly. the other type is "rough" they dont have a gene fo the polysacceride coat and are not virulent
