I think centuries of senseless slaughter has finally taught Europeans that ignorant superstition isn't worth fighting and dying for. ... that, four hundred years after the Enlightenment began, Europeans are finally accepting that Science describes reality far better than ancient superstition. The ancestors of today's Europeans built enormous Cathedrals to edify the glory of their imaginary God. Today's Europeans appreciate that such misguided efforts are monumentally futile, and know that history proves religious authority has always done civilization far more harm than good.
Edit: Spirit Wanderer is correct that the current generation of ignorant believers has seriously undermined America's hopes for a prosperous future. Thanks to the Radical Religious Right, technical and scientific education in the USA is currently unable to compete with the significant advances in the rest of the world. It borders on criminal that America's students are expected to advance technologically, while they are being systematically handicapped by utterly irrational units of measure -- which even the English have already abandoned. The first thing an American technical student learns upon reaching college, is that he must discard most of his already obsolete education and adopt the rationally designed MKSA metric system, if he hopes to be able to comprehend how physical science actually works. This places America's technical students at a twelve year disadvantage, the day they enter college. You can thank the Bible Thumpers in Congress for this fiasco.

Education and a world where we no longer have to rely on superstition or invented supernatural explanations nearly so much as we have advanced enough to understand many things formerly attributed to supernatural have natural explanations. In Europe there is also the history of religion bringing war, division, and destruction rather than peace and unity on a much more direct and personal level. The bloody savagery of the Protestant vs. Catholic divisions. The Inquisition, burning at the stake of scientists like Buno who dared defy dogma but were later proven right, the manipulation of religious people's biases by the Nazis and the horror that brought, the way priests ran away from many towns when the plagues were decimating them and prayer failed, etc... I think Europeans have an even more personal experience of the short comings and failures of religion to deliver on its promises.

Education. European countries are usually smarter than the United States, one because of better schooling ('cause everyone here is more worried about prayer in school or some other b.s.) and they're usually more open-minded. See....when someone gets to be in a certain intelligence level, they tend to try and think for themselves, now, sometimes, they think to themselves and come to the point of saying, "There is no such thing as a god/goddess" While some do not. That ratio is just higher in Europe than in the U.S. sadly.
Keep promoting education for all! ESPECIALLY in the United States, quit your bickering about prayer in school and other crap, and concentrate on our children's futures, because at this rate India and Europe will far outstrip us in intelligence, and it'll all be the last generations fault (you guys) 'cause you were too busy trying to push your own damn morals and beliefs onto us, instead of trying to teach us everything you can! Thank you older generation for pretty much f*ckin' us in the a55.Source(s): This rant brought to you by: A really p1ssed off Senior at High School....

That single factor pushes religion into the light, and when examined by a rational and reasonable eye, it shrivels and dissapears.
Religion belongs on the ash-heap of history.

Because of education, logic, reason and common sense. As well as they are truly able to see that religion is no longer needed in their lives.
Sadly it is not happening here in the US

Because they are having sex, obviously.
(Population increase is just one of the side effects of having sex, smiling more often is another.)Source(s): Spirit Wanderer, Zen Pirate and Diogenes have given you very excellent answers. Pay attention and think about what they said. (but don't forget about the sex thing either)
