1.In the history of the West，Modern一詞是時間上的比較，即古代相對於現代的意思。但他的value是一個新紀元的意義，是一種新紀元的自覺意識，將自己視為遠古過渡到新時代的意涵，自覺」就是重新定義古代和現代的關係。然而科學革命改變了人們對於「現代」的意義，人們開始認為知識會一直進步下去，社會和道德也一樣會改善得越來越好。所以「新」的東西就是好的，這樣的觀念一直影響現代的人們，而現代的作品也因為是現代產生的「新」作品，所以現代的作品成為經典。Modern已經失去了古今對比的意涵，取而代之的，是「新」。
2.十八世紀的學者提出的project of Modernity，以下敘述。Max Weber認為宗教和形上學所表達的具體道理分化成三個領域：科學、道德和藝術。按實效分類成三方面：真理、normative rightness、authenticity與美感。真理屬於知識的層面，normative rightness屬於正義與道德的層面，authenticity與美感屬於品味的層面，使得文化出現制度化、專業化的趨勢，即形成三大理性結構：認知—工具、道德—實用、美學—表現。
十八世紀的人們過於樂觀的想像未來，以為世界會變得越來越進步。但發展到二十世紀，過度專業化的文化和日常生活脫節，脫離了日常溝通的hermeneutics，project of Modernity出現了問題，變成Habermas說的incomplete project，這樣的問題使人們嘗試「否定」專才文化，project of Modernity變成incomplete project。
3.aesthetic modernity中的作品為了解放被壓抑的人性，因此需要新語言來表達內容，這樣的作品呈現出片段的、無邏輯的內容，這就是aesthetic modernity的時間意識，主要透過前鋒和前衛的隱喻表達出來。規律、機械的現代性對人性的壓抑，挖掘被壓抑的幽暗潛意識，是一種不同於外在要求一致性但也不等同於個人情緒的普遍人性-新感覺。新感覺要用新語言來表達，因此產生了許多新的文學再現技巧，包括夢幻意識流、立體主義、後印象派、超現實主義等等。
這樣的時間意識大致上形成於一次世界大戰後，對未來不再抱持樂觀的想法，認為未來是捉摸不定的、短暫無常的。一次世界大戰後destroy the continuum of history，英雄情懷取代了歷史的記憶，第一次世界大戰後的人們充斥著對整體性消失的焦慮以及完整、統一、一貫主體神話的渴望，因此藝術中常充滿國家或英雄式的大敘述，強調藝術家與一般人在表達、創意上的特殊性，恢復人們感知的能力。
