How would I change the background on a pic?

Alright I need to take a family picture and change the background. i know I can do it, but I just dont know exactly how!

I need to cut out the people then paste them into a plain background! How exactly will I do that, and what software will I need? And can I get any of these programs free?

what i would do is resize the photo to about 1200 by 1200 pixels. Use the selection tool and set it to point to point feather 1. Outline the selection that you want to keep the same. Once it's outlined copy the paste as new image with transparent background. Now select new and create a new canvas 1200 x 1200. Create whatever background you desire. Once done copy and paste the photo over your new background. As long as you take your time while using the point to point section it will look excellent. Good luck.

I made a video of this for one of my classes:

I used the Gimp, a free open-source photoshop clone

    rtsp://wally.cs.iupui.edu/n351/N351-5f.rm

describes use of channels, layers, and masks (the primary tools for this sort of work)

I've got some other vids there to help you get started with Gimp if you need more....

    rtsp://wally.cs.iupui.edu/n351/N351-5d.rm (intro to Gimp)

    rtsp://wally.cs.iupui.edu/n351/N351-5e.rm (transparency and alpha)

You'll need real player (or the better open source real alternative) to view these files.
