Heat transferring through a metal is via conduction. But what is this? Heat is vibrational energy of the atoms in the metal and heat conduction is how vibrations from one part of a metal can move to another.
A metal is a very good conductor of heat (and electricity) because many of its electrons can easily move from one atom to another. They are called "free electrons".
A plentiful supply of free electrons means that the vibrational energy of an atom can be picked up (by the electrons) and moved to atoms nearby more quickly. So heat (the vibration) moves from atom to atom - and is conducted.
