File Transfer protocol or FTP is the method of copying files from one machine to another. It originated on Unix machines but has become part of everyday life through the exlosion of the internet (which uses many unix and linux machines)

FTP or File Transfer Protocol is used to transfer data from one computer to another over the Internet, or through a network.

Specifically, FTP is a commonly used protocol for exchanging files over any netTCP/IP based network to manipulate files on another computer on that network regardless of which operating systems are involved (if the computers permit FTP access). There are many existing FTP client and server programs. FTP servers can be set up anywhere between game servers, voice servers, internet hosts, and other physical servers.

The site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FTP_server should give more extensive explanation

In Internet jargon, a protocol is a set of rules between computers that will manage the space that you are working on.

For example http (hyper text transfer protocol) will handle situations and data that are made up of that type (hyper text) between a server (the computer you will be visiting with) and a client (your own).

In the case of ftp (file transfer protocol) the rules allow between computers the exchange of any type of files.

Unlike http, in ftp you handle the files directly without the need of any script or coding.

    Hope this helps.
