    In anatomy, the stomach is a bean-shaped hollow muscular organ of the gastrointestinal tract involved in the second phase of digestion, following mastication.

    The stomach is a highly acidic environment due to gastric acid production and secretion which produces a luminal pH range usually between 1 and 4 depending on the species, food intake, time of the day, drug use, and other factors.

    Thanks to the lower pH of gastric juice, most of the bacteria are killed.

    Combined with digestive enzymes, such an environment is able to break down large molecules (such as from food) to smaller ones so that they can eventually be absorbed from the small intestine.

    胃是消化系統中的一部分,用於消化食物。一般來說,胃的最主要功能並非吸收食物中的營養成分,這個功能主要由腸來完成。胃主要用於將大塊食物研磨成小塊,並將食物中的大分子降解成較小的分子,以便於進一步被吸收。

    胃會在消化過程中分泌出胃酸(氫氯酸HCl pH=2)及蛋白酶(胃蛋白酶)。胃壁會分泌黏液層,而防止由胃腺所分泌的蛋白酶及胃酸的消化。胃酸-用於殺死附在食物表面的細菌。蛋白酶-用而將蛋白質轉為肽(peptides)。

    所以胃是有消化酶(digestive enzyme),而並非消化菌。

    中醫的胃主要負責「受納」及「腐熟水穀」,「受納」是指接受和容納。「腐熟」則指飲食物經過胃的初步消化而形成食糜。因此胃亦有「水穀氣血之海」之稱。進食後食物會被送胃,然後胃氣和胃液便會作用於食物,並將食物分解,讓小腸作進一步消化。
