# what do the numbers "925" mean if they're inscribed on the inside of a ring? its silver w/ a diamond

the ring is somewhat tarnished looking because it was found outside, but we're assuming that the numbers are "925". how else could we find out the value of the ring? (cincinnati ohio area)

92.5% Silver, i.e Sterling Silver.

Gold is measured in "karats". Pure gold is 24K. So, testing your math skills (where's that calculator), what is the percentage of gold in the average 14k jewelry they sell in the US?

Hint: Not very much.

Is it any wonder that most Asian and Middle Eastern countries offer 21 and 22k gold? It's a far better value.

Back to your question: Diamonds are measured in a different "karat", but also graded by several factors, the four "C"s as they are called: Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat Weight.

As valuable diamonds are rarely set in silver, and even moderately large diamonds with poor specs under the 4 C's are not expensive, I can estimate that this ring, not even seeing it, is not worth more than \$150, and possibly much less.

925 Sterling Silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. It will tarnish, but some good silver polish, like Wright's Silver Polish Cream, will bring it back to its natural shine.

You can find the value of the ring by taking it to a local jeweler. Most will be more than happy to give you the value.

925 is a good thing. It refers to how much actual silver is in your ring. To be considered "sterling" 925 is the number you look for. Buy some silver jewelry cleaner and the tarnish will come right off.

Dose my ring that states 925 on the inside mean that my ring might be valuable?

• 1 decade ago

It means that it is 925 parts pure silver. That is known as sterling in the U.S. and also in the U.K.(However in the U.K. if there is no assayers mark, a lion, it will be called white metal)
