No - it was a reminder that Venezuala does not want a return to dicatatorship - a sombre reminder that open democracy works.
Chavez was endorsed by 68% of the vote at the last open election for president (more than Putin's rigged 60%).
This last vote was only 51% against him and was not against socialism but against his proposed anti-democratic reforms that he concatonated with accelerated social change. He was over-stepping himself - He thought he could get both in but the people saw through it. They said "keep giving us the rewards of social ownership - e.g. re-nationalised water and oil BUT do step down when your time is up as we don't want another dictatorship".

...It made me ask who has the allegiance of Venezuela's military - no matter how people vote (like in Cuba), whoever owns the military will rule the roost.

It seems that the people of Venezuela realized that they shouldn't have given him absolute rule earlier in the year.
