Origins of 666
The idea of the Triple God/dess has existed well before the beginnings of Christianity. The Christian God also holds the Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Ghost/Spirit, mirroring a religious aspect that dates well into the beginnings of solidified Pantheons.
The Christian God is said to create the world in 6 days on the 7th he rests. On the six day is the creation of man.
"And God went on to say: 'Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness, and let them have in subjection the fish of the sea and the flying creatures of the heavens and the domestic animals and all the earth and every moving animal that is moving upon the earth.' And God proceeded to create the man in his image, in God's image he created him; male and female he created them."-Genesis 1:26, 27."
So we can see how the number of man is 6, being created on the Sixth day.
The Devil/Satan is label through history as the God of Flesh or something very similar depending on who/where you hear it. The God of Flesh is therefore also the God of Man, not of Christian man but of everyother man. Because the Devil is a "God" his number holds the Trinity aspect... being the Trinity God of Man, and Man's number being 6... the Devil's number becomes 666!
In Numerology, the number 6 is one of the most harmonius of numbers. First a brief background must be explained. The number 1 is a male number, both because of its phallic symbol and embodiment of masculine attributes such as physical and mental activity, and creative power. The number 2 is a feminine number, the II symbolic of the vaginal passage, and embodying feministic properties; accepeting, yielding, warm. The number 3 is another male number. Rotating it on it's side symbolizes the male reproductive testies and it is also 1 (male) + 2 (female) making it the number of Offspring.
Background infomation done, mathematically 6 is both 2 (Female) times 3 (Male) and 1 (Male) + 2 (Female) + 3 (Offspring), making it extremely balanced and hence symbolic of harmonious sexual union. The upward (male) and downward (female) triangels superimpose to form the 6-pointed star. It also very much mirroring a woman's pregnant expanding womb. It is both a female number and 2 x 3 and therefore represents the nurturing side of womanhood -- the stable, safe, warm, domestic aspect of motherhood.
Because it is portrayed as such a female number, celebrating the beauty of motherhood and sexuality, it was shunned by the original Church. It was greatly in their favor to layer 6 with negative connotations, thus diminishing the popular practice of numerology and marking mothers with 6 of some item for good luck. (i.e. 6 flowers or a necklace with 6 beads.)
From here, a propaganda was built around this number and it is said to be an evil omen or some other such nonsense. In any case, whether you believe it is evil or not... that is the origin of the Number of the Beast. Oddly enough, more people avoid the number 13 than 666. Multiple hotels remove room number 13 from every floor but room number 666 will remain. Curious...-

The number of the Beast
Main article: Number of the Beast
In the Bible, the Book of Revelation (13:17-18) cryptically asserts 666 to be "the number of a man", associated with the beast, an antagonistic creature that appears briefly about two-thirds into the apocalyptic vision. The author challenges the reader to figure out the symbolism of this number, a challenge that has inspired mystics and would-be prophets ever since. The number of people who have been proposed to be the man whose number is 666 is vast and ever growing; it usually does not demand much ingenuity to find several ways to connect one's political or religious opponent with the number 666, since there is no biblical restriction on how a connection between a man and the number may be established.
In modern popular culture, 666 has become one of the most widely recognized symbols for Satan or the Devil. Earnest references to 666 occur both among apocalypticist Christian groups and in explicitly anti-Christian subcultures such as that surrounding some heavy metal bands; more humorous allusions to the 666 symbolism (e.g., the Lemmings level featuring three 6's built upon "hellish" lava terrain) are mainstream. An appearance of the number 666 in contemporary Western art or literature is more likely than not an intentional reference to this number of the Beast symbolism. Such popular references to 666 are too numerous to list here.
It is not uncommon to see the symbolic role of the integer 666 transferred to the digit sequence 6-6-6. Some people take the satanic associations of 666 so seriously that they actively avoid things related to 666 or the digits 6-6-6. This is known (more or less tongue-in-cheek) as hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia.Source(s): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/666_(number)

666 The Mark of the Beast What Does It propose? FEW Bible subjects have evoked as lots pastime and situation because of the fact the prophecy correct to the mysterious mark, or call, of "the wild beast"—the type 666. On television and the internet, besides as in video clips, books, and magazines, the mark of the beast has been the concentration of countless hypothesis. some have self assurance that 666 is the mark of the Biblical antichrist. Others say that it shows some sort of obligatory identity, which incorporate a tattoo or an implanted microchip with a digital code that identifies the guy as a servant of the beast. nevertheless others carry that 666 is the mark of the Catholic papacy. Substituting Roman numerals for the letters in a sort of the pope's genuine call, Vicarius Filii Dei (Vicar of the Son of God), and manipulating the figures a sprint, they arise with 666. it is likewise claimed that an identical sort may be calculated from the Latin call of Roman Emperor Diocletian and from the Hebrew version of the call Nero Caesar.*

directly from the bible. Rev. 13:16, 13:17, and 13:18. Rev 13:16
Rev. 13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
Rev 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six
666 was the secret symbol of the ancient pagan mysteries connected with the worship of the Devil. It is to day the secret connecting link between those ancient mysteries and their modern revival in Spiritualism, Theosophy, etc. The efforts of the great enemy are now directed towards uniting all into one great whole. The newspapers, wordldy and religious, are full of schemes as to such a union. "Reunion" is in the air. The societies for the re-union of Christendom, and the Conferences for the re-union of the Churches, are alike parts of the same great movement, and are all making for and are signs of the coming Apostasy. During this age, "Separation" is God's word for His people, and is the mark of Christ; while "union" and "re-union" is the mark of Antichrist.

666 the number of the Beast from the Apocalypse of John, commonly known as the "Book of Revelation". One explanation is that 666 is a code name which alludes to the Roman emperor Domitian, who brutally persecuted Christians during his reign. According to this theory, the Christians referred to their oppressor as "Nero reborn". "Nero Caesar" in Greek is "Neron Kaisar". Hoping to keep the full import of the document hidden from the authorities, the author of the Apocalypse translated this title into Hebrew, then added up the numeric value each Hebrew letter represented for a total of six hundred and sixty-six.

666 and 888
'This is wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666' - Revelation 13:18.
Most people know that 666 is the number of the beast. Who or what the beast is, or why he should have a number is less certain ground.
Not many people will have heard of 888. Surprisingly 888 occurs in the Bible verse immediately following the one containing 666, quoted above. However it is hidden in the verse rather than clearly stated, as I will be explaining later.
The Scriptures are inspired by the Holy Spirit, and without the help of the Holy Spirit we can only understand them at the superficial level of the natural mind. We can understand their moral teaching and enjoy their stories and poetry, but we are in darkness as to their spiritual meaning.
Some things in Scripture are specifically described as mysteries. In various places in the New Testament we find such statements as 'He that has ears let him hear,' or 'Let him that reads understand' or 'Behold, I show you a mystery.' Revelation 13:18 (quoted above) begins with the words 'This is wisdom.' Such phrases indicate something hidden, which we must search out by prayerful study in dependence on the Holy Spirit. Our topic of 666 and 888 is in that category.
To understand Revelation 13:18, we will need to study the preceding verses. Most people would do this naturally here, as they are dramatic, and obviously part of the same topic. We will also need to study the verses following. Many people would not do this here, because they are in the next chapter, and at first sight don't appear to have any special connection. It is the verses following in chapter 14 that hold the key to understanding the number of the beast.
We will also need some knowledge of the subject of Bible numerics, without which it is impossible to understand the significance of 666 or 888.
Numbers in the Bible have significance. Seven, for example, is regarded as the number of spiritual perfection and of God. Thirteen is often associated with rebellion and Satan. Six is particularly the number of man and his works.
How do we know the meaning or significance of a given number?
The significance of numbers is established by their use both in Scripture and in nature. God created man on the sixth day in the Genesis account, and on the seventh day he rested from his works. He appointed 6 days for man's labour. After 600 years Noah, whose name means Rest, ceased from work and entered the ark. These, and other scriptures, make 6 the number of man and of man's works apart from God. The seventh day is the Lord's day. The Bible, especially the book of Revelation, is heavily patterned on the number 7. This indicates that 7 is the number of God.
The meanings of numbers are further illustrated and established by the study of Gematria or the numeric values of words. The Greeks and Hebrews did not have separate symbols, such as 1, 2 and 3, for numbers like we do. Instead, like the Romans, they used the letters of their alphabets. In Greek alpha represents 1 and beta 2 and so on up to iota, which is 10. After that kappa is 20, lambda 30 and so on up to ro, which is 100. Sigma is 200, tau 300 and so on up to omega, which is 800. These values are shown in the table below. (The number 6 was originally the letter digamma which later dropped out of use.) This means that you can take the letters of any word or name, and add them up to get a total value for the word. That value is called the gematria. The name Jesus (IhsouV in Greek) adds up to 888.
