Connect the cross-over LAN cable and connect between the two PC's network card.
Manually set both PC to use same IP subnet, i.e. Vista to 192.168.1.10 and WinXP to 192.168.1.20
Share a folder (i.e. Share_Folder) on your Vista PC and assign a user with read/write access (both share and NTFS permission)
From your WinXP access your Vista share by typing command \\192.168.1.10\Share_Folder , then input your Vista user credential with write access to the share and you can access the share folder from WinXP
