There will be a terrible noise followed by a long pause and a and the sounds of a person screaming in agony. And that would be you after you try that prank mister! HaHa! The only thing would be that the water would get cold but not rapidly. since the water tank has at least 30 gallons in it the result would be like you staying in the shower too long and all the hot water fades away is all. Why are you planning on getting somebody out of the shower quicker? just reach up over the water tank and close off the hot water supply side so cold only will come out at once. That will get em out of there HaHa!

The water from the heater is "pushed" out by the force of the cold water coming in. If you turn off the cold water inlet valve at the heater, the only water going to the shower would be the cold coming from the cold water supply. The pressure in the shower would also lower due to only one water supply being used.

cold shower for the unsuspecting person. If I am correct (I could be wrong), when you turn off the water to the water heater you stop the flow of the hot water out of the water heater. It does not empty it.

In a normal situation you can not turn the "hot" water off at the hot water tank. What you do is to close the incoming cold water valve letting cold water into the tank--- which in turn stops hot water from leaving the tank from this incoming water pressure.

It would be the same as taking a cold shower --- no hot water would flow.

As far as the hot water tank itself ------ it would remain full of water, and continue to cycle heat on and off ----- the water just would"nt go anywhere ---- it would just sit in the tank --- waiting for the cold water valve to be opened again ,in order to "push" the hot water through the pipes again.

If you close the valve on the water while the shower is on.... the water flowing from the water heater will stop...so whoever is in the shower will be very cold and angry!!!! Note .... this will happen as soon as you close the valve because there is no pressure to push the water to the shower!!!

Well, if you do that the water in your house will run cold, even if the shower was already on and running hot.

It would take a while for all the hot water to empty itself through the shower head before it would come out cold.

    Cold water will come out.

Doing this might get you punched in the mouth by the unsuspecting person in the shower. Tread lightly!

the water should stay hot until the water heater emptys the hot water
