On a global basis, total dissolved phosphorus and nitrogen have doubled, and in areas of Weatern Europe and North America they have increased by factors of 10 to 50. Nutrient concentrations from selected rivers vary greatly because of differences in their natural state and extent of local human influence(Table 13.2).The Glama is a large Scandinavian river draining a region of predominantly hard crystalline rocks, within a largely forested watershed. The highest values in the Glama occur in its agricultural, sparsely settled lower reaches, and are still very low. Tropical rivers in general have low concentrations of chemical constituents compared with temperate rivers. This is because tropical rivers are for the most part precipitation-dominated, although local geology con also be important (chapter 2).
