The biggest NHL building is the Bell Centre in Montreal (21,273) and it's sold out every night. United Centre in Chicago seats 20,500. Detroit's Joe Louis Arena is third at 20,066 and the sooner they bulldoze that barn the better. The only rink smaller than Rexall Place's 16,839 capacity is Long Island's Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum at 16,234, and it lost most of its charm when Bryan Trottier and Mike Bossy left. Here's the list from top to bottom, bearing in mind that there's a difference between capacity and actual fannies in the seats. Lots of NHL rinks are big, but they're too big (The United Centre is like an airport hangar with no atmosphere and almost never full). The Oilers should probably have a building that has 18,000 seats.

    1. Montreal, 21,273

    2. Chicago, 20,500

    3. Detroit, 20,066

    5. Philadelphia, 19,523

    6. Calgary, 19,289

    7. Florida, 19,250

    8. Ottawa, 19,153

For an indoor arena, no. The length of the rink is simply to short ( and thin) for more than probably 27k people to see normally. I know Tampa Bay used to have an arena that sat a little more than 26k people but that arena is now defunct. But, if you were talking about an outdoor NHL game you could easily fit more than 50k people. A good example would be Michigan State's team which holds more than 74k people and the Buffallo Sabres/ Penguins game at Ralph Wilson Stadium which i believe had 60k people.

Detroit Red Wings Joe Louis Arena 20,066

    Nashville Predators Sommet Center 17,113

The Joe is a dump. Rumors have been flying for years that Illitch wants to get a new arena and is willing to pay some (like he did with Comerica Park). Detroit wants the land its on bad too. Too bad Michigan and Detroit are broke.
