Why does your moral compass point north, east, south, or west but never up the the heavens?

Because any moral compass based on faith will point anywhere the person believes it should.
Faith is a relativistic system of knowledge as it requires no evidence to support it. That is why faith can be so easily used to justify even the most attrocious acts and call them moral.

I think mine points inside--if I wouldn't want it done to me, I don't do it to anyone else.
