In critical situations the sender might ask the receiver to repeat the message and explain his or her understanding of it. When speaking to a group, a sender can gain feedback by observing the audience, asking questions, or administering an evaluation. Because the most important goal of business communication is that the receiver understand the message, feedback from the receiver to the sender is essential to confirm that understanding.

Communication Barriers

Although knowledge of the communication process and skill in implementing it are basic to effective communication, the sender must also deal with barriers that interfere with the communication process. A communication barrier is and factor that interferes with the success of the communication process (see Figure 1.3. These barriers may occur between any two of the communication process steps or may affect all the steps in the process. The most crucial barriers are discussed in the next sections.
