    Here's a basic outline for essay writing. YOU get to fill in the blanks!

    General Guideline for Essay Writing

    I. The introduction paragraph

    A. Sentence 1: The hook.

    1. This is an attention getter. It is designed to get the reader’s attention and interest him/her in your topic. It can be funny, thought provoking, or phrased as a question.

    B. Sentence 2: The topic statement.

    1. This sentence builds on your hook by identifying your topic. Do not use this sentence as your thesis. That comes later. Simply state the theme of your essay.

    C. Sentence 3: The thesis statement.

    1. This sentence states your position on the topic. It is here that you will state whether you agree, disagree, support, not support, or have an alternative solution, to the essay topic.

    D. Sentence 4: The list of evidence.

    1. This sentence states the two areas of analysis you will use to support your thesis.

    E. Sentence 5: The transition.

    1. This sentence sets up your first body paragraph. It introduces the idea you will analyze in the next paragraph.

    A. Sentence 1: The topic sentence.

    1. This is a brief recap reminding the reader again of your two areas of analysis, and telling the reader how they proved your thesis.

    C. Sentences 3 and 4: The catchy ending.

    1. In these sentences, you can restate your hook, but this time in the past tense. This shows the reader two things: first, that you proved your point throughout the entire essay; and second, that you stayed focused throughout the essay.
