It really depends on how you define "scary." Se7en is a psychological thriller, so there aren't a lot of cheap thrill scares (like people jumping at you, etc...). I guess the best way I could describe it would be to say it is scary more in terms of "there are really people like that out there." This is more a movie that will chill you to the bone and require you to change your world view, rather than just make you jump while in the theater.

It is also very gruesome.

Seven came from a premise that things happening were real...

not a true story but the crimes were based on real ones...

that makes it scary...

and gruesome because of detail....

the movie was hard to see... the images were blurry, poor light, the whole environment worked...
