Preaching to the unconverted is fairly easy for at least two reasons. First, the audience tends to agree with the speaker; as a result, little convincing is necessary. Second, both the speaker and the audience tend to embrace the same language, they hold the same values, and they make parallel assumptions. As a result, communication can be streamlined, and it can flow easily allowing a “meeting of the minds” to occur.

When speaking to the unconverted, however, a different set of conditions exists. First, the audience is not predisposed to the message and may actually be hostile to it. As a result, evidence and chains of thought that are respected and routinely embraced by the converted may be rejected as out of hand or irrelevant by others who adhere to different and/or conflicting perspectives.

For all its obstacles, however, “preaching to the unconverted” has a mouthing orthodox doctrine to those who already believe in and accept it.

In this regard, many cultural tourism professionals embrace humanistic perspectives that are largely alien to business thought and tactics. By skillfully presenting these ideas, however, it may be possible to subtly(and possibly dramatically) shift the orientation of organizations that impact host cultures and communities through tourism.
