I reversed my car today and heard a loud "clunky"noise...?

Question

coming from the rear of the car......It may be my brakes.

And, they have been bad for a while, (poor college student)

I have a 2000 Dodge Neon.

What does something like this cost to repair?

My mom's car does the same thing, but no one can seem to figure it out. Are you sure it came from the rear of the car? The Neon's automatic transmission is not the heartiest piece of machinery, so I'm wondering if it's not the transmission starting to conk out.
